Let’s talk about PRD, baby!
What is a product requirements document?
The PRD (Product Requirements Document) is the heart of your product.
It’s a living document for any designer, developer, or stakeholder to understand the purpose of the product.
What PRD is not?
It’s not a document to communicate with users or external stakeholders.
It’s not a product proposal.
It’s not a design document.
So what is it?
It defines the product's features, functionality, and purpose, making the final product meet both user needs and business goals.
It’s a structured document with two main sections :
Problem alignment: we identify the problem.
Solution alignment: we explain the solution.
Problem alignment
Feature Opportunity: the specific problems it aims to solve.
What does it do? / What purpose does it serve? / How does that improve customers' lives? ….Target Audience: What is the specific audience you’re serving?
Customer Insights: What are the insights from your user research?
Competitive Insights: How have best-in-class companies implemented this feature?
Goals & Success: which metrics do you want to impact, and which ones you don’t care about or don’t want to impact? It helps your team to make trade-off decisions.
Solution alignment
Implementation Details: What are the key functionalities you need to implement?
Launch Plan: What are the launch phases for this feature?
Press Release & Release Plan: This is for marketing. So it’s all the stuff you’ve just described, but in a way, everybody can understand the product and the value proposition.
Investigative Metrics: What indicators would you like this feature to measure?
